For the past five years, Mark Elson (Deputy Manager Nancy Oldfield Trust) and Humphrey Bedford-Payne of the Norwich School, have joined forces to undertake the planning and execution of sailing a Norfolk Punt from Beccles to Barton Turf, to raise money for the Trust. Mark helms the Punt and is crewed by two students from Norwich School, who share the duty during the day. The Punt is supported by a safety boat which is driven by one of the Nancy Oldfield Trust volunteers, Lester Wellerd and staff member, Emily Greves. The challenge has been to sail the length of the journey within 12 hours.

This year the challenge takes place on Friday June 20th from Norwich to Barton Broad (finishing at Neatishead), approximately 50 miles in distance. In the past the challenge has started at Beccles. This year the new starting point (Norwich) is a nod to the birthplace of the Norfolk Punt Club, which was formed at the Assembly Rooms in 1926, their centenary being next year, and the Norfolk Punt Club being located on the shared waters of Barton Broad.

Every pound raised will contribute to making visitor sailing experiences more engaging, immersive, and unforgettable. The funds will help improve equipment, maintain vessels, and enhance safety measures, ensuring every sailor—novice or experienced—feels confident and excited on the water.

By contributing, you’re not just funding a sailing experience—you’re helping to create cherished memories and a deeper connection to the water, to those who would otherwise struggle to access it.
